This article defines and discusses how to use Wistia, the native video hosting integration found on the Thought Industries platform.
Use Case Information
Use Wistia to manage videos, upload videos in bulk, leverage Wistia's video settings in the Wistia interface, and more. When you upload a video to your Thought Industries instance, it is stored in Wistia. You and your colleagues can acquire Wistia admin access so you have the ability to upload videos to Wistia in bulk, manipulate videos with some limited functionality within the Wistia interface, among other Wistia features.
Benefits
- Upload videos direct into Thought Industries
- Use a Wistia Media ID to load it within the Thought Industries video interface
- Thought Industries has access to your project to troubleshoot and monitor usage
- Full reporting sync between Wistia and Thought Industries
Limitations
- You are limited to one project for all of your videos (cannot sync to multiple projects).
- Wistia cannot provide an API access token unless you have your own Wistia account.
Tip
If you have your own video hosting platform, work with your Implementation Consultant or CSM about how best to use your video hosting platform with your Thought Industries platform.
How to Use a Wistia Media ID to Populate Videos in Your Instance
If you've already uploaded your video to Wistia, you can use a Wistia Media ID to quickly import a video to the platform. This shortcut applies to video pages, video content types, or video widgets.
- Log in as an admin in your Wistia project.
Note
To gain admin access to your Wistia project, contact your Project Manager (if onboarding) or your CSM (if launched).
- In the Media menu, click on a video title.
- In the video URL, locate the Wistia Media ID; this ID contains a combination of 10 letters and number and is found at the end of the URL. (e.g. mk3t428ark)
- Copy the Wistia Media ID.
- Navigate back to the platform. In the video container, click I have a Wistia Media ID.
- Paste in the Wistia Media ID.
- Click Save Video.
Wistia FAQs
What is the file size limit for video uploads?
Uploading within the Wistia app supports file sizes of up to 8GB.
How much storage do we have in our Wistia project?
We typically allow 1TB of storage and offer them one project in Wistia. Check your contract (with your CSM) to see if your allotment is different.
Will changes in Wistia affect my Thought Industries content?
Any updates made to a video in Wistia will immediately propagate to any place this video is used in the Thought Industries platform.
How can I keep my content organized in Wistia?
Organize your videos by creating Sections in Wistia, since folders are not an option.
Does my company have a Wistia account?
Your organization has one Wistia project integrated with your Thought Industries instance, not a full Wistia account. If you wish to have more functionality than is offered through your Thought Industries project, contact Wistia to discuss pricing for your own Wistia account.
If you have your own Wistia account, you are allotted multiple folders to organize videos, along with an API key that relates to that account to sync multiple projects, bulk upload, and move videos, for example.
Note
If you have your own Wistia account, Thought Industries does not have access to your account and does not monitor your account. Some completion reports are limited and may not sync back from Wistia to Thought Industries.
Can I get my videos out of Wistia?
You can export all videos into a ZIP file by clicking Export All Media in your Wistia interface.
Where do I edit my video player design?
You can start in Wistia and set player design and function, however, changes to platform design that are made in the Thought Industries platform will override Wistia design settings, which are found in Wistia > Customize > Appearance.
What are my options to customize the video design and function?
Explore the Customize menu to choose your video's thumbnail, add chapters to the videos, upload SRT files or order closed captions (automated captions are an additional cost), add call-to-action overlay buttons, and improve accessibility.
Can I copy videos from my Thought Industries sandbox to a production instance?
Yes, you can. However, content copied from a sandbox to your production instance will retain the original Wistia Media ID.
Example:
Your sandbox instance is linked to specific Wistia Project (i.e. Wistia Sandbox Project). You would then create video content in your sandbox with the Wistia ID(s) copied from the Wistia Sandbox Project. When you go live, you would copy content from your sandbox instance to your production instance. The copied content will retain the Wistia ID from the Wistia Sandbox Project. Metrics and reporting, though, will be reflected in the Wistia Sandbox Project, not the Wistia Production Project that is linked to your production instance. As such, video updates must be performed in the original Wistia project (In this case, the Wistia Sandbox Project).
If you do not wish to use the Wistia Sandbox Project to keep videos updated in your production instance, you would want to load them on in your production instance so they are reflected and subsequently managed in your Wistia Production Project.
Can I add a user to my Wistia project?
First, an Admin user needs to be added to your Wistia project by a Thought Indutries team member. Reach out to Thought Industries Support if that has not happened yet.
Once one Admin user has been added, that user can invite additional users to the Wistia project by following these steps:
- Login to Wistia
- Go to Content Library and click into your project.
- Go to Permissions.
- Add the email address for the new users and check the permissions you'd like the user to have.
- Click Save.
