By default, the platform makes it easy for new learners to register and gain access to content—most organizations want to welcome new users who are ready to learn or purchase. However, some organizations prefer to keep registration more controlled and tightly manage who can access their site.
To support this need, you can take advantage of this feature.
Controlling learner registration via codes is behind a feature flag.
Reach out to Support to request to have this feature enabled on your site.
Use Case Information
When Learner Registration Requires Code is enabled:
- New users must provide a valid redemption code to create an account in your learning instance.
- Users without a code cannot create an account in any other way—including during the eCommerce checkout process. This prevents anyone “off the street” from discovering and purchasing your content without first receiving a valid code.
- Existing logged-in learners are not impacted and can continue to access content as usual.
When the feature flag is disabled, the system behaves as it does today—valid codes are still enforced when required by the user interface, but learners without a code can still register normally.
Learner Experience
When this feature is enabled:
-
If a learner attempts to register without entering a code—either
through the checkout flow or directly on the registration page—they
will see an error message:
Registration Code is required. - This message prevents them from continuing until they provide a valid code.
Tip
This error message is fully translatable under Settings > Translations, allowing you to adapt the wording to your learners’ language and tone.
Important Considerations
If you enable this feature, you’ll need a clear process for creating and distributing registration or redemption codes to learners. A valid code is the only way a new user can create an account and begin engaging with your content. Without it, they cannot register or purchase anything on your site.
Ideas for building your process
Here are a few ways to ensure a smooth experience for your learners:
- Distribute codes before registration: Provide codes in advance through email, your website, or your sales process so learners have what they need before they attempt to sign up.
- Use automation to send codes proactively: Leverage your CRM, marketing automation, or communication tools to send codes after a learner expresses interest, signs a contract, or is invited to access your site.
- Provide codes through a dedicated portal: For internal learners (e.g., employees or partners), codes can be shared through your intranet, onboarding materials, or LMS admin.
- Offer bulk codes for organizations: If you sell learning access to a company or group, provide the administrator with a batch of codes they can distribute to their learners.
- Set expectations upfront: Make sure your learners know they’ll need a code before they try to register. Adding messaging to your marketing pages, invitations, or sales communications can help avoid confusion.

When to use this feature
Enable this feature if:
- You want to strictly control who can create accounts in your instance.
- Your learning site is limited to a select audience (e.g., employees, partners, or invited customers).
- You need an added layer of security for site access.
