Do you need to organize multiple content items for learners in a longer learning journey? To achieve these goals, the ease and flexibility of Learning Paths just may be the solution for you. Learning paths can be used to adhere to specific certifications guidelines, time requirements, credit guidelines, and more.
Use Case Information
Learning Paths are created by assembling content that is natively authored within the platform, in a specific sequence and within milestones. These milestones have completion criteria so that learners enrolled in a Learning Path will be guided through content in a guided manner.
Common Use Cases Include:
Curate Content and Microlearning that share the same topic in one Learning Path
All content is elective. Allows learners to skip around to choose the order they will consume your content.
Curate Content and Microlearning to earn Awards and Badges
Milestones feature required content. Design specific, curated milestones so the learner earns awards for meeting the completion criteria for the content in each milestone. Learners might also earn a badge upon completion of the Learning Path.
Curate Content and Microlearning for Certification
Milestones feature required content. Works well if you need a certificate to be granted to learners after they complete required milestones.
Choose Your Own Learning
Using Competency Assessments, you can configure a Learning Path to provide individual learning experiences based on the learner's responses to the assessment. Paths can be flexible to provide a "Choose Your Own Adventure" experience where the learner selects the content to consume, whether based on job role, skill level, competency of a topic, or even interests!
Curate Content Using a Competency Learning Path
Using Competency Assessments, configure a Learning Path to provide individualized learning experiences based on the learner's responses to the assessment. After completing an assessment, the learner is assigned relevant content based on their level of competency or skill.
Create an Assigned Program
Configure a Learning Path to include due dates (and remind learners of due dates with learner notifications!) by using Assigned Programs.
How To Configure a Learning Path
Use the steps below to create a Learning Path.
- Click the plus icon in the top right corner to Add New Content.
- From the content creation flow, click the Select button on the Learning Path tile.
- Next, decide if you'd like to build your Learning Path from Blank (scratch) or off of a previously built Learning Path (template).
- If starting from Blank, select the content type you would like to build off of and then title your Learning Path.
- If not starting from Blank, select the existing template to work off of from the dropdown menu and title your new Learning Path.
Tip
If you are taking advantage of templates, the content type and many other settings will be carried over to the new learning path. To learn more about templates, check out this help article.
- Click Create.
- You will start on the Milestone tab, start building your learning path by adding milestones (i.e. “Stage 1”, “Stage 2”).
- Click Add Milestone to get started.
Tip
You can copy milestones from existing Learning Paths by going to the Existing Milestone tab on this step and searching for the milestone you want to copy! Only available to main site manager roles with creating content permissions.
- Enter a Milestone Name and choose if this milestone should be released immediately upon learners gaining access to the learning path. You also have the option to add a milestone description.
Tip
If your descriptions are repetitive or maybe you use the same milestones in more than one place, you can add milestone descriptions from the Asset Library. Click the book icon in the WYSIWYG to see your options!
- Click Add Content button.
- Add content to your milestones by selecting content from the Search for content box or from the drop down that appears.
Tip
If searching, please use a full word or words. The system will load results and you can use the filter options that appear to narrow down your selection.
- If the content has more than one available session, you can choose whether or not learners are able to select and complete any session or just the session added. To allow sessions toggle on Allow Learner to select and complete any session in the content.
Note
Only released sesssions are available as choices for the learner in this configuration. This includes panorama use cases. Make sure your sessions are released by editing the content item, then selecting the Release step.
- From the Elective or Required? drop down, choose either required or elective.
Tip
Marking content as required will automatically add it to the completion criteria.
- Click Save.
- Specify completion criteria for each milestone.
Note
This can include time-based criteria, CEU- or credits-based criteria, completion of a certain number of digital courses, etc. If your site has any award types set up, they will also be an option for completion criteria.
- Click Save.
Tip
If more than one elective is added, you will have the option to make one or more electives required as part of completion criteria.
- Complete all authoring steps to configure the Learning Path fully.
- Milestones: Add milestones, Milestone settings and content in each milestones.
- Design: Necessary information for the detail page.
- Completion: Add Certificates and/or Credly badges.
- Enrollment: Add access dates and configure ecommerce options.
Tip
If a certificate is desired, go to the Completion step > Certification to attach a certificate that is awarded upon completion of the learning path. When this is set up, a certificate is granted to the learner once they meet all completion criteria set at the milestone level.
Tip
If both the learning path itself and the content contained in the learning path have limits to restrict the number of days a learner can access them, the access limits that you have imposed on the learning path will be respected (not the access limits of the content items). The learning path's access limits override the individual content items' access limits.
Create a Flexible Learning Path
You can choose to have required content across multiple milestones and have the learner take the content in any order. Configuring this revolves around the setting Force Linear Progress. Default behavior is to have this setting for Force Linear Progress enabled and learners will have to take the content milestone by milestone and cannot hop ahead to milestone 2 if they have not completed milestone 1. When disabled, learners can move around the learning path milestones as they please while still knowing that content items are required for overall learning path completion.
- Go to Courses > All Courses.
- Choose your learning path and click on the title to edit.
- On the Milestones step, expand Learning Path Options.
- Disable Force Linear Progress.
- Click Save.
- Make sure to continue configuring the learning path by adding milestone content and going through the remaining authoring steps if you haven't already!
Renaming a Learning Path Content Type
You can update the display name of your Learning Path if you want your learners to see different terminology. You can also report based on the Learning Path content type. Below are the steps to change the content type language for your Learning Path.
- From your homepage, select Courses > All Courses.
- Select the Learning Path Content Title for to the Learning Path you wish to alter.
- Navigate to the Design step > Edit Catalog Settings.
- In the Catalog tab, click inside the Learning Path Type field and enter the Content Type language that best represents your brand's language.
- Click Save.
Setting Up Pay As You Go Option For Your Learning Path
Within the Enrollment step of creating your Learning Path, you have the option to allow learners to purchase the Learning Path easily and intuitively.
Admin View:
Did you know you can also set up your Learning Path to have "Pay As You Go" as an alternative purchase option? Here is how it works.
When enabled, the learner gets immediate access to the first piece of content in the learning path. For each additional piece of content thereafter, the learner goes through a checkout process to pay for the next piece of content in the learning path.
- Create or edit a Learning Path.
- Navigate to the Enrollment step.
- Enable Apply purchase to first content item only.
- If enabled, learners will be charged the set price, but only be given access to the first piece of content in the Learning Path. Learners will then be prompted to purchase all other items individually.
- Click Save.
- For the learner, the first item will display a Start button after initial purchase. All items after that will take the learner to a detail page to proceed through the checkout process.
Any content items within the second milestone will open up for purchase after the first milestone has been completed, based on whatever completion criteria is set on that milestone.
Learner View:
Tip
If you are using more than one milestone in the learning path and Force Linear Progress is enabled, only content items within the first milestone will be available for purchase after the initial purchase. Once the courses in the first milestone are completed, the next milestone will open to the learner and those content items will also be available for purchase so learners can continue the learning path.
Note
After purchasing a piece of content from the collection/learning path, the learner will be redirected to the learner dashboard, not back to the collection/learning path.
Designing the Learning Path
You can design the learning path content page and the learning path detail page sidebar, both globally or individually.
Learning Path Layout
This is the layout that learners will see after enrolling in and starting the learning path content. It is what they will view to walk through the learning path and take the content. The global layout affects all learning paths that do not have a custom layout enabled. Custom layouts are set up one learning path at a time and you can always revert back to the global layout.
Path to Global Layout: Site > Site Builder > Layouts > Learning Path Layout > Actions > Edit
Path to Custom Layout: Courses > All Courses > Choose Your Learning Path > Design Step > Display Tab > Add Custom Layout
Layout Widgets
- Learning Path Hero Image Widget: Pulls image, title, and description dynamically from your learning path content. While editing the widget itself, you have the option to change the size of the hero image on the learning path page.
- Learning Path Progress: Displays a high level linear view of milestone progress to the learner with a trophy at the end representing completion. No options to edit this widget.
- Learning Path Milestones: Shows the learner the content in the milestones. This is the widget where learners actually access the learning path content from the learning path page. From the widget editing interface, you can edit required/elective colors, choose a list or timeline view (screenshots below), or enable milestone accordions, which allows learners to expand and collapse milestones on the learning path page.

Learning Path Detail Page Sidebar
This is the layout that learners will see on the detail page sidebar for the learning path content. It is what they will view to purchase and enroll in the learning path. The global layout affects all learning path detail pages that do not have a custom detail page sidebar layout enabled. Custom layouts are set up one learning path at a time and you can always revert back to the global layout.
Path to Global Layout: Site > Site Builder > Layouts > Learning Path Detail Sidebar Layout > Actions > Edit
Path to Custom Layout: Courses > All Courses > Choose Your Learning Path > Design Step > Edit Catalog Settings > Detail Page Tab > Add Custom Layout
Learner Experience
- A learner can enroll in a learning path the same way as any other piece of content. Once enrolled in a learning path, learners will be able to view it from their dashboard via the Learning Path tab on the Dashboard Access Widget (see image below). From here, learners can click into the learner view of the learning path to see all milestones, content, and completion criteria.
- When a learner clicks Start on a piece of content, it will automatically enroll them in the content. This means that the specific piece of content will now be viewable in the In Progress tab on the learner's dashboard. Additionally, any Learner Notifications related to that content item will trigger. Once content is completed, it will move from the "In Progress" tab to the "Completed" tab.
- If a learner has already completed a piece of content within a learning path prior to enrolling in said learning path, they will not be required to complete it again.
- Learning Paths can be provisioned to Panoramas. Once a learner has access to a milestone, they will see the individual pieces of content for the respective milestone in the catalog widget on the learner dashboard.
- To set up Learner Notifications in relation to the content within learning paths, navigate to Users > Notifications > Learner Notifications.
Learner Notifications is behind a feature flag.
Navigate to Apps in your instance to request to have this feature enabled on your site. To read more about this feature, please refer to this article.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if I add content to the learning path after it's released and learners are taking the content?
Learners will gain access to the newly added content via the Learning Path. In progress learners will need to take the new content if it is required and in a milestone the learner has not yet completed. Learners who have completed the Learning Path, or completed the milestone where you added the content, will remain in Completed status, however, the learner will have access to the new content and will also see the new requirements (if applicable).
