By default, learners can navigate freely forward through a course. However, you may want to require learners to progress through each page in order, which is called forcing.
Use Case Information
When this setting is enabled, learners will not be able to skip ahead to other pages. However, learners will always be able to navigate backward to content they have already viewed.
Additionally, you can force linear progress on a quiz or test so that learners can only advance in the course once they've passed the assessment. Check out our quiz or test page articles for details.
How to Force Linear Progression in a Course
- From your homepage, select Courses, then All Courses.
- Click the Content Title for the course you want to alter and go to the Completion Step. You will land on the Completion Criteria page.
- Toggle Force Linear Progress? to Yes. By default, this setting is disabled and learners are able to navigate freely throughout the course.
- Enter a Completion Time in seconds. This is the required time that learners must stay on each page before being allowed to navigate forward. (If no time is entered, the default is that learners must wait 3 seconds before being able to move forward.)
- You can also require learners to enter a password at the end of every section by toggling Ask learner for password at section transitions? to Yes. Enabling this feature prompts learners to enter their registration password before accessing each section of the course. This ensures the learner's account remains active and the user cookie is kept active.
- Click Save.
