Detail Pages allow the learner to find information about the learning objectives, pricing, access dates and more of a content item such as a course or learning Path. This makes a detail page a very important part of the user journey and an important part to promote your content.
Use Case Information
A detail page is automatically generated for every piece of content and eCommerce item that is created on the Thought Industries platform. Detail pages are the public-facing pages that learners and potential learners may browse to learn more about your offerings. While these pages are automatically created, they can be further configured.
When configured you can control the following:
- Add Image or Video to help promotion or explain the Learning Objectives
- Add a title and description to the Learning Path, course or content item
- Add tabs for further explanation, including syllabus details, presenter details and reviews.
- Place, move or edit the detail sidebar widgets.
Configure Detail Page Basics
- From your homepage, select Courses > All Courses.
- Click the Content Title for the course you want to alter and select the Design Step.
- Click Edit Catalog Settings, then go to the Detail Page tab.
- From here, populate the fields to configure your course detail page settings for:
01
Title
One of the initial steps in creating your content is to give it a title. On the detail page tab, you have the option to change or edit this title. If you're organizing sessions, this is your opportunity to distinguish them from the overall course group title.
02Description
Using the description box, place your content description to clearly communicate the purpose of the content to your learners. Providing a concise and informative description will help them understand the key points and relevance of the material.
03Content Type
The Content Type field indicates the custom content type name, whether it is a Thought Industries base content type or a custom content type you have created. If multiple content types are associated with a piece of content, a dropdown menu will appear. You can select the desired content type from the dropdown, which will determine how it is displayed in the catalog for your learners and how you can report on it. Learn more about Content Types here.
04Video or Image
The image or video you upload here will be displayed on the left side of the page under the title & description. The specifications are as follows:
Image: 800x450px
Video: 8GB limit, h.264, Aspect Ratio 16:9 Bit Rate 5,000 - 10,000kbps, mp4
05Tabs
Tabs provide a space to include a wealth of helpful and informative content. See the next section of this article to learn more about how to use them effectively.
06Related Content
Suggesting related content enhances user understanding, offers upsell opportunities for advanced features or products, and encourages deeper engagement with the material. You can cherry-pick the content you want to appear as related content on the detail page. To make sure your Related Content will display on Detail Pages, go to Site > Site Builder > pick a detail page layout > choose the Related Content widget. This will ensure the content you choose in each content item will appear for your learners in the Detail Page sidebar.
Note
To preview the detail page for a piece of content, go to Courses > All Courses > Click the Actions Menu > Click Detail Page. Remember you're viewing the page as a manager, so the sidebar will display differently because you already have access to the content. We recommend to always test with a learner account for accurate enrollment flows.
Tip
You can choose to set up a free preview lesson. The link for a free preview lesson will display above the price widget. See our Setting Up a Free Preview Lesson in a Course article.
Add Tabs for Content Items
At the bottom of the Detail Page tab, you will have the option to add custom tabs using the provided templates. To do this, click Add Tab and select a tab type. There are 6 different tabs available:

The Products tab allows you to attach products, digital or physical, that you have set up in the eCommerce section of Thought Industries. These Items can then be added to the cart and made purchasable by the user visiting the detail page.
Testimonials
The Testimonials tab allows you to show published reviews. The reviews are captured at the end of course completion by a learner.
Meetings
Meetings are only available as an option if using the event based course option for ILT or VILT courses.
Note
Ecommerce Items, such as Subscriptions and Products, only have 3 tab options available:
- Free Text
- Instructors
- Products
Note
Learning Path Detail Pages do not have the option to add tabs because that space is utilized to display the milestones and courses within the Learning Path. By default, there is a "View Details" link next to each course description that leads to the Course Detail Pages (where tabs are available).
Customize Global Detail Page Layout
You can customize the layout of the detail page sidebars. Every content and ecommerce item will display the global detail page sidebar layout unless customized at the item level.
There are two global detail page layouts to configure:
Course Detail Sidebar Layout
This layout applies to most content types and ecommerce items. The exception is Learning Path Detail Pages.
Path: Site > Site Builder > > Layouts > Course Detail Sidebar Layout
Learning Path Detail Sidebar Layout
This layout applies to Learning Path Detail Pages only.
Path: Site > > Site Builder > Layouts > Learning Path Detail Sidebar Layout
Tip
When you have the Recommendation Engine enabled and the Related Content widget on a detail page, note that you have the option to have AI recommend content to learners instead of selecting your own related content. When enabled, we use AI and Machine Learning to suggest related courses automatically based on learner activity. To enable this setting, first make sure you have added Related Content to a content item, like a course or a learning path, in the Design tab.
Customize Individual Layout Detail Page
At the top of the Detail Page, you will have the option to add a customized layout for your detail page (by default, the global layout will be used). To customize, click Add Custom Layout.

Redirecting the Detail Page
If you have an unreleased content item and need to keep the detail page secure and private, you can use the External Detail Link field. This is available for courses and learning paths.
For released content, the detail page would still be accessible by all users, and for unreleased content, learners who are enrolled or provisioned to the content will still be able to access the native detail page.
You have two options to set this up:
Redirect the Detail Page all of the time (default)
If you are using an external catalog page, add a URL to the External Detail Link field to redirect users to the external detail page specific to that content item.
- Go to Courses > All Courses.
- Click on a Content Title.
- Go to the Design step.
- Click on Edit Catalog Settings and go to the Advanced Settings tab.
- Add the URL and click Save.
Redirect the Detail Page conditionally based on learner access
If the learner has access to the unreleased content, the learner will be allowed to view the detail page. If the learner does not have access to the content either via purchase or panorama provisioning, the learner will be redirected to another page. To redirect the learner, add a URL to the External Detail Link field.
Conditional detail page redirects are behind a feature flag.
Reach out to Thought Industries Support to have this feature enabled on your site.
Tip
Depending on your catalog of available courses, you could choose to redirect each content item to the same page, e.g., the course dashboard or a generic “I’m sorry, you don’t have access to this item” page, or you could redirect the learner to a similar purchasable course.
Learner View Example
Learners can view the detail page from a variety of places - it's up to you and how you've designed your pages. After you've created content and designed the detail page, make sure to think through how learners will discover the content. It could be from the catalog widget, featured content widgets, or even from competency assessment recommendations. The sky is the limit!
FAQs
Are there any other pages, besides the Detail Page, where the related content widget can be added?
Yes, you can add the Related Content widget to the Article and Video layouts. For all other content types, the Related Content widget is only available on the Detail Page.
Read more about Related Content in Articles and Videos here.
Some customers like to add links to related content at the end of courses. So although it's not a built-in widget, you can essentially create a page with content ads before the learner exits the course. This could be as simple as a text page.
