This article explains how to add and customize Featured Content widgets to your instance on Standard Layouts and Custom Pages.
Use Case Information
Highlight specific pieces of content using the Featured Content Widgets. You can add content dynamically or manually. Adding dynamically allows you to use tags and queries to rotate content out and keep the widget fresh without redesigning the widget! Adding manually is useful if you'd like to use a different image or title/description than what is in the content item settings.
Lead learners to content for many different reasons such as:
- keeping learners up to date on new content releases
- showing advanced content, or grouping content on the page by difficulty level
- organizing content by topics
Comparing the Three Featured Content Widgets
There are three types of Featured Content Widgets. Each type of Featured Content Widget has different characteristics. The table below compares the differences.

Add and Customize Featured Content Widgets on Standard Layouts
Adding and customizing Featured Content Widgets is very similar on Layouts and Pages. This section explains the process for Standard Layouts.
- From your homepage, select Site > Site Builder.
- In the left menu, select Layouts.
- Choose from the provided default page layouts.
- Select Actions and then Edit from the dropdown.
- Select Content Type to display in widget: Dynamically Display Content or Manually Create Content.
01Dynamically Display Content:
Choosing this option allows you to select content individually or through a query. The tiles will update dynamically as changes are made to the content (i.e. title change, description change, image change, etc.).
Populate the widget by selecting content individually or writing a query. See our article on writing queries for further guidance.
Tip
It's important to select a display option to determine the display order of the items. If you need to control the item order more carefully, we recommend choosing to Manually Create Content (scroll down a little for more info on this option).
02Manually Create Content:
Choosing this option allows you to have flexibility on the Item Title, Item Description, Item Image, and the Item Link. Values in these fields will override the display in the content tiles. You have control over the order the items will display, if that is important to you.
Add Items by clicking the "+ Icon" button.
Note
Display checkbox options apply when you link to a Content Item in the Item Link field. This allows you to dynamically display some of the information.
- Choose display options for content items.
- Title
- Use New Title Display

Tip
After making updates to your layout design, we always recommend viewing the final product from a learner's perspective to get the full effect.
