Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) helps ensure your learning content is discoverable, understood, and surfaced by AI-powered tools such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Perplexity.
Instead of requiring users to browse multiple links, AEO allows your content to appear directly within AI-generated answers or as a cited source.

AEO is useful for organizations that want to ensure their customers receive accurate, up-to-date answers when using search engines or AI tools.
Without AEO, AI-generated answers may be incomplete, outdated, or not aligned with your official content. AEO helps your content become the source behind those answers, improving accuracy and consistency.
How AEO Works
AEO enhances your content behind the scenes by using structured data on the page. This helps AI systems understand what your content is about and when it should be used to answer a question.
This process happens automatically in the background and does not change how your content appears within your platform.
AEO can surface and cite information from your site in AI-generated answers, but only when that information is publicly accessible. Understanding what “public” means in this context is key, as it applies differently to site pages and content items.
Public site pages, such as a course detail page or a custom landing page, can be discovered and cited by AEO if the page itself is publicly accessible, or not behind a login.
The information within a content item, such as lessons or text inside a course, is only eligible for citation if the item is individually configured to be public.
Public accessibility for content items is controlled through settings at the content level within Thought Industries. The following can be configured for public access:
- Articles and Videos: Navigate to the Enrollment step and enable the Accessible to Public toggle
- Courses and Microcourses: Ensure lessons are set to Open to Everyone when creating or editing them.
- Site Content (e.g., detail pages, custom pages): Ensure the page is not restricted behind a login and can be accessed publicly
Enabling AEO
AEO must be enabled sitewide before it can be used. Once enabled, AEO will apply to content and site pages that are publicly accessible at the content or page level.
To enable AEO:
- From your Admin Homepage, navigate to Apps.
- Click Conversational AI Learning.
- Review and accept the Terms of Service.
Note
The feature will only be enabled once the Terms of Service have been accepted.
Once enabled, AEO works automatically. Only content marked as public is eligible to be surfaced in AI tools.
What to Expect
Once AEO is enabled on the Thought Industries platform, your eligible content will be made available for indexing and distribution to external AI systems.
Over time, this content may begin to appear in AI-generated answers or citations. This process is not immediate and is controlled by external AI platforms, which determine when and how content is discovered, indexed, and surfaced.
If content is updated, there may be additional delays before those changes are reflected in AI-generated responses.
