Bongo Role Play is an extension of Thought Industries' existing Bongo integration that enables learners to practice real-world conversational scenarios and receive AI-powered coaching feedback within a course.
If your organization uses Bongo with Thought Industries, Role Play can be added as a course page to support coaching, communication practice, skill rehearsal, and other practice-based learning experiences.
Use Case Information
AI Coaching helps organizations provide scalable practice and feedback for skills that are difficult to develop through content alone. These activities are especially useful when learners need to practice interpersonal or communication-driven scenarios, such as sales conversations, customer support interactions, manager conversations, partner enablement, or other role-based practice.
With Bongo Role Play, learners can get coaching directly within a Thought Industries course. The learner interacts with an AI-powered coaching experience and receives feedback based on the activity configuration.
When configured, you can:
- Add Bongo Role Play pages to courses.
- Give learners realistic role-play and coaching experiences in the flow of learning.
- Require learners to complete a Bongo Role Play page as part of course completion.
- Use Prevent Course Progress to stop learners from moving forward until the AI Coaching activity is complete.
- Extend your existing Bongo integration to support role play.
Note
Bongo Role Play is separate from Bongo Video Assessments. Video Assessments are used for learner-submitted video assignments, Q&A, and interactive video activities. Role Play is used for conversational role play and structured coaching feedback. Creating a Bongo AI Coaching Page
Bongo Role Play pages are available in Course Content Types only.
Before adding a Bongo Role Play page, make sure:
- Your organization has an active Bongo contract that includes Role Play.
- Bongo Role Play has been enabled for your Thought Industries instance.
- The course already exists and has at least one section and lesson.
Note
If you are adding a Bongo Role Play page to a course that does not yet exist, you will need to create the course and add a section and lesson before adding the page.
To add a Bongo Role Play page to a course:
- Navigate to the course where you would like to create the Bongo Role Play page.
- Go to Courses > All Courses and click the course title.
- In the course outline, click Add Page.
- Select the Bongo Role Play page option.
- Configure the Role Play activity in the embedded Bongo experience.
- Save the Bongo configuration.
- Make any optional changes to the Thought Industries page settings.
- Click Save.
- Publish your course changes.
Tip
Configure the Role Play activity with clear learner instructions, role-play context, and evaluation criteria so learners understand what they are practicing and how their performance will be assessed.
Editing a Bongo Role Play Page
To edit an existing Bongo AI Coaching page:
- Navigate to the course with the Bongo Role Play page.
- Open the course outline.
- Select the Bongo Role Play page.
- Click Configure.
- Make the necessary updates.
- Click Save.
- Publish your course changes.
Note
Depending on the Bongo configuration, some activity settings may not be editable after learners have started or completed the activity.
Using Bongo Role Play in Completion Criteria
Bongo Role Play pages can be included in a course's completion criteria. This allows you to require learners to complete the activity in order to complete the course.
To add Bongo Role Play to completion criteria:
- Go to Courses > All Courses.
- Click the course title.
- Click the Completion step.
- Add a new completion criterion.
- Choose Bongo Role Play Completed.
- Select the Bongo Role Play page the learner must complete.
- Click Save.
When this completion criterion is added, the learner must complete the selected Role Play activity before the course can be marked complete.
Using Bongo Role Play with Prevent Course Progress
You can use Prevent Course Progress with a Bongo Role Play page to prevent learners from moving forward in a course until the AI Coaching activity is complete.
When Prevent Course Progress is enabled:
- The learner must complete the Role Play activity before continuing past the page.
- The Role Play completion status is used to determine whether the learner can proceed.
- If the page is also included in course completion criteria, the activity must be completed before the course can be completed.
To enable Prevent Course Progress:
- Navigate to the Bongo Role Play page in the course.
- Open the page settings.
- Enable Prevent Course Progress.
- Click Save.
- Publish your course changes.
Tip
Use Prevent Course Progress when the Role Play activity is a required part of the learning path and learners should not continue until they have completed the practice activity.
Learner View
When a learner reaches a Bongo Role Play page in a course, the coaching activity appears directly in the Thought Industries learning experience.
The learner does not need to open a separate tool or navigate away from the course. They complete the AI coaching activity as instructed and receive feedback through the Bongo experience.
Some things to know about the learner experience:
- Learners access Role Play from a course page.
- Learners complete the role-play or coaching activity inside the embedded Bongo experience.
- The activity can be required for page progress or course completion.
- Learners may be asked to accept Bongo terms or consent prompts as part of the existing Bongo experience.
