Translations are a way to customize your instance to fit your lingo - from what you want to call "courses" to email call to action buttons.
Use Case Information
Use Translations to change certain built-in terms that are displayed across the Thought Industries platform, like labels and buttons. You can update site text to better reflect your organizations preferred terms, branding, or style. A common example of this is changing the term "courses" to something like "classes" or "guides".
Translations can also be used if you want to use an entirely different language on your site. Once your default language is changed, all built-in translations will automatically update (see our Selecting a Default Language for Your Site article). If you want to further customize site text, you will have the ability to overwrite terms, in any language, by using Translations. Languages found in Translations by default include English, Chinese, Portuguese, German, French, Spanish, and Japanese.
How to Update Labels, Buttons, and Email Text in Translations
- From your homepage, select Translations.
- From the left menu, select one of two options to update their respective text:
- Platform Content: Update the text used throughout your learning site.
- Email Content: Update the text used in system emails that are sent from your learning site.
- Platform Content: Update the text used throughout your learning site.
- In the Search for a translation field, enter the exact text you want to change (e.g. registration, password, checkout).
- In the search results that automatically appear, locate the desired field. Populate/overwrite the text field with your new text.
- Click Save.
Tip
Get notified of new native strings you can update by signing up for updates to translations! In Translations, click Platform Content, locate Recently Added Strings, then click Turn-On Translation updates. Enter the email address where you wish to receive these updates. Be sure to click Save.
How to Add a Language
You can add a new language if native languages do not meet your needs.
- Click Add Language.
- Add a Language Key (e.g. AmEnglish).
- Add a Language Display Name (e.g. American English).
- Click Save Custom Language.
How to Import a Key-Value Pair JSON File (KVP)
Once you've added a new language, expedite the creation of the new translations by using the following process to use an existing set of translations as a foundation for your new language.
- Click the language tab you wish to use as a base translations document.
- Click Export. A KVP .json file will be generated and downloaded.
- In the .json file you exported, change the text you wish to customize in the value field.
- Click Import.
- Choose the .json file you want to import.
- Review the text on the warning modal screen.
- Click OK to overwrite any existing translations for the currently-selected language.
Note
Not all fields support HTML or other variables. For fields that include a variable, you may rewrite text around that variable. For example, the text in the home.meta-description
variable can be modified around the variable, so %{companyName} online learning classes
could instead read %{companyName} online courses
