In regulated industries, training isn’t just important, it’s critical. To help safeguard assessment integrity and meet compliance needs, we've teamed up with Integrity Advocate (IA) through a built-in integration.
Use Case Information
For organizations that require secure, verifiable assessments, the Integrity Advocate integration provides an added layer of protection.
When configured you can control the following:
- Proctoring can be applied to specific quiz or test pages within a course
- Learners must pass proctoring to receive course completion
- The Integrity Advocate Participant Interface appears directly in the assessment—no installation required
- Admins can view results and override decisions from the Integrity Advocate Results and Administration Widget inside the authoring interface
- The integration helps prevent cheating and supports compliance audits
How the Integration Works
Integrity Advocate is behind a feature flag.
Navigate to Apps in your instance to request to have this feature enabled on your site.
While the Integrity Advocate integration is built into the Thought Industries platform, certain configuration and usage details are governed by your direct agreement with Integrity Advocate.
The following elements of the Integrity Advocate setup are managed directly through your contract with Integrity Advocate and are outside of Thought Industries' control:
- Integrity Advocate Account Management
- Includes account creation, user management, and payment handled directly through Integrity Advocate.
- Activation Level & Rules
- Based on your contract, Integrity Advocate customers pay for certain Activation levels to be enforced in proctoring. Activation levels basically specify how intense / severe the proctoring conditions are for an activity. For an Activation level, there are different rules that can be configured.
- Licenses
- Customers pay for a certain number of licenses. A license is consumed each time a participant initiates the first proctoring session for an assessment. A new proctoring session is created when a participant launches the IA participant interface and their webcam captures the first image. Unless session data has been purged by IA, additional sessions of that same assessment will not consume another license.

Once your contract is in place, here’s how the integration functions within the Thought Industries platform:
- Connect your Integrity Advocate app to your Thought Industries instance.
- Enable proctoring on any Thought Industries test or quiz page.
- This will trigger an additional completion criteria that proctoring must be passed for that page.
- Additional IA settings can be configured for each page / activity.
- Before the assessment: Learners are presented the IA Participant UI prior to starting the proctored page.
- They have to submit required info (e.g. photo, ID) before they can access the assessment.
- During the assessment: The learner must comply with the specified rules.
- After the assessment: A proctor reviews the learner’s session and gives them an Overall Status (Valid or Invalid) for the activity.
- If learner receives a Valid status, the course completion criteria is satisfied. Admins can override the proctor’s status for a learner if they want.
- If there are multiple sessions or attempts for an assessment, then the status for each one rolls up to the overall Status. Learner must have a Valid proctoring status on every attempt.
Connect Integrity Advocate Account
To enable the integration, you’ll need to connect your Integrity Advocate account to the Thought Industries platform.
- From your Admin homepage, select Settings > Connections.
- Click Third Party.
- Scroll down the page to the Integrity Advocate section.
- In the Integrity Advocate container, enter the following:
- App ID
- App Key
Note
When you set up an account with Integrity Advocate, you will need to provide the URL(s) that the integration will be set up on. The integration will only work on these specific URL(s). If you have multiple instances (e.g. sandbox and production), you will need to provide Integrity Advocate with all URLs.
Enable Proctoring
Integrity Advocate can only be enabled and configured by Admins and main site roles.
- Proctoring is available on content types where quiz / test pages are available.
- Course
- MicroCourse
- ILT with pre-post
- VILT with pre-post
- In the Authoring Completion tab, a new Proctoring tab displays the IA Admin widget.
- The Activities tab populates with all quizzes or tests within the course.

- Click the checkbox beside the page title that you want proctored.
- Other IA settings can be configured for an assessment.
- Change the Activation level in the dropdown field (optional).
- Modify the Rules by clicking the Select Rules button (optional).
-
IMPORTANT: You must click Save after making any changes in the IA Admin widget.
- When Integrity Advocate has been enabled for an assessment page, a new completion criteria is automatically added to the course.
- Criteria: Require the learner to pass proctoring check for [Page Title].
- This criteria cannot be edited or deleted. It can only be added/removed by enabling or disabling proctoring on the assessment.
- There could be multiple proctoring completion criteria in a single course if there are multiple proctored assessments.
Review and Override Status
Admins can monitor and manage proctoring results for each participant using the IA Admin Widget, where individual session details and override options are available for every proctored assessment.
- In the IA Admin Widget, click the Participants tab.
- Use the filters or search to find a particular assessment or participant.
- Each row represents a participant’s proctoring session.
- If the participant has multiple sessions for an assessment (e.g. they have multiple attempts for that quiz/test), each session will display individually as a row.
- While each participant session is given a status, all of these will roll up to an Overall Status for the assessment.
- Participants need to review a Valid status in every session, in order to receive a Valid Overall Status.
- Click Override to manually override the session status (optional).
- Changes here will update the learner’s completion criteria accordingly.
- Changes here will update the learner’s completion criteria accordingly.
How to Disconnect Integrity Advocate
If you attempt to disconnect your IA account, you will see a warning message. The IA Admin widget will no longer load and the the Participant user interface will not be triggered, so learners will not be able to take the proctored quiz or test. If that same account is reconnected, then everything will load again and all previous proctoring settings will be maintained.
Follow these steps to disconnect your IA account:
- From your Admin homepage, select Settings > Connections.
- Click Third Party.
- Scroll down the page to the Integrity Advocate section.
- Click Disconnect Integrity Advocate Account.
- On the confirmation pop up, click Yes, I'm sure I want to disconnect.
Note
Reminder: To completely remove Integrity Advocate from your instance, start by disabling proctoring on any quiz or test pages using the IA Admin Widget—this ensures the proctoring completion criteria no longer appears in the course. Once that’s done, disconnect your IA account in the Third Party settings. Finally, disable the feature flag to fully remove all Integrity Advocate elements from the user interface.
Learner Experience
Here’s what learners can expect when taking a proctored assessment with Integrity Advocate enabled on your site.
- Learner navigates through a course where proctoring has been enabled on a test or quiz page(s)
- When the learner lands on the assessment start page, this will trigger the IA Participant UI to display. The Participant user interface takes over the screen so the learner cannot access the Start button until they complete the proctoring steps.
- Click through the proctoring steps to submit the required info.
- Reviewed privacy policy.
- Grant access to camera + microphone.
- Submit Photo.
- Submit Photo ID.
- View the Rules that must be followed.
- Click Finish which will trigger the start of the proctoring session + display the assessment start page.
- During a proctored assessment, the course navigation buttons are disabled so that learners cannot accidentally move away and end the proctoring session early.
- After the assessment is completed and learner lands on the assessment Results page, this will end the proctoring session.
- Every new assessment attempt will trigger a new proctoring session for that activity. With each new proctoring session, the learner will need to go through all the proctoring steps again.
- A proctor will review the learner’s session(s) for that assessment. Learners will receive a “Valid” or “Invalid” Overall Status in the activity. A Valid status is needed to satisfy the proctoring completion criteria for that assessment.
Note
The participants screen is not customizable.
Note
Integrity Advocate limits up to 5 sessions for a proctored activity.
FAQs
How long does it take for the Status to be updated in the IA Admin widget?
It depends on the session review priority, determined under the customer’s IA contract.
Priority
Highest: Under 10 minutes
High: 10-30 minutes
Medium: Up to 2 hours
Low: Up to 12 hours
Lowest: Up to 24 hours
What browsers support Integrity Advocate?
Different IA features have different browswer support. Contact Integrity Advocate Support for more information.
What if the account runs out of licenses for proctoring?
- Learner will see a pop up when the assessment page loads. When they click “OK” the assessment page will be stuck on a loading state and they will not be able to start it. However, they can proceed to other pages in the course.
- Once there are additional licenses added, the learner should be able to proceed as usual.
- Note: Admins can monitor remaining licenses within the IA Admin Widget Admin tab Activation Details table
Who can enable and configure Integrity Advocate proctoring?
Only Admins and users with main site roles can enable and configure proctoring using the Integrity Advocate integration.
Can Panorama learners take courses that include proctored assessments?
Yes. If a proctored quiz or test is provisioned from the main site, Panorama learners can still take the course and complete the proctored assessment.
Can Panorama authors configure or enable proctoring in their courses?
No. The Proctoring tab is hidden from Panorama authors. They cannot enable or adjust proctoring settings, even if the course includes a proctored assessment.
Why is proctoring not configurable at the Panorama level?
The IA Admin Widget is not segmented by Panorama, meaning authors could potentially see learner data from other Panoramas or the main site. To maintain data boundaries and security, proctoring configuration is restricted to the main site.
Will proctoring support for Panorama authors be available in the future?
Possibly. Future enhancements may include settings that allow main site Admins to choose whether proctoring can be exposed at the Panorama level, especially given the cost considerations tied to proctoring usage.
Does enabling proctoring affect other assessment settings in Thought Industries?
Yes, when proctoring is enabled, several assessment settings are automatically adjusted to support the integrity of the experience.
Is there a recommended limit for assessment attempts when proctoring is enabled?
Yes. While the default is unlimited, a maximum of 5 attempts is recommended for proctored assessments. This aligns with Integrity Advocate’s limit of 5 proctoring sessions per activity.
What happens to the “Disable Navigation During Quiz” setting when proctoring is on?
This setting is automatically enabled and cannot be changed. Help text: “Navigation is always disabled for a proctored assessment.” Note: For tests, navigation is always disabled by default, so this setting doesn’t appear.
Can learners resume an in-progress assessment when proctoring is enabled?
No. This setting is automatically disabled and locked. Proctored activities are intended to be completed in one sitting to prevent rule-breaking during breaks.
Can learners skip questions on a proctored quiz?
No. The “Skip Questions” setting is automatically disabled for quizzes. Skipping and later returning could trigger a new attempt and a new proctoring session, which may create a poor learner experience.
Can an instructor complete a proctored assessment on behalf of a learner?
No. This option is disabled when proctoring is enabled. Currently, instructors cannot take a proctored assessment for a learner within the integration.
