A tally is a no-stakes assessment that provides specific feedback to learners based on their responses.
Use Case Information
Tally assessments are similar to a BuzzFeed quiz, which famously uses quizzes to help match learners to predefined profiles, like the learner's learning style, enneagram type, or ideal job role, all based on learner responses via a total weighted point value.
When you create the assessment, each question you create will have a corresponding point value. When a learner submits their tally assessment, the platform totals the point value of each of the learner's responses, then presents the learner with the predefined profile that corresponds to the range of a particular score tier. There are no correct or incorrect answers.
Tip
Tallies are used primarily for engagement, but can also be used for upsells, among other uses, as suggested in the product example below. Point values and score tiers are set up on the backend of the platform and are not visible to learners.
Tally Example
Your tally might ask learners a series of questions whose results would direct them to a particular product out of four different products in the given tally assessment. If you create five questions, your score tier might look similar to the example score tier below. In this example, we provide a single question example, but typical tally assessments have several questions.
Question: Which of the following is most important for your education program to develop next?
Response Choice A: An eCommerce solution (5 points)
Response Choice B: A way for learners to engage with each other (10 points)
Response Choice C: A way to automatically assess soft skills for my learners (15 points)
Response Choice D: A way to license our content to groups (20 points)
On the backed, each response has a point value assigned to each question (shown above) that is tallied as the learner progresses through the assessment. The ultimate goal is to match the cumulative point value to a score tier. That would then align with a product, listed below.
Score Tiers
Product A: Stripe Integration (Score Range 0-25)
Product B: Communities Widget (Score Range 26-50)
Product C: Bongo Integration (Score Range 51-75)
Product D: Panorama (Score Range 76-100)
If the learner's answer choices add up to a score of 0-25, their end message would recommend a Stripe Integration since that is the point value that corresponds with the learner's answers. Presumably, the result shown to the learner would be the best match for the product that would help the learner build out their learning program, based on the answer choice points and score tiers.
How to Create a Tally Page
- From your homepage, select Courses > All Courses.
- Click the Content Title for to the course you want to alter.
- Within the course outline, go to the lesson where you'd like to add a tally.
- Click the plus sign in your course outline > hover over the Add Page icon and click.
- Select the tally page type.
- Add a page title.
- Click Save.
- Click on Create New Question. From here, you have the option to add multiple choice, true/false, image comparison, open ended, file submission, and essay.
Note that there is no question type will have the option to select a correct answer because tally assessments are not graded.
Read more below to learn about each question type:-
Multiple Choice: Learners select one or more answer choices in response to a question.
-
True/False: Learners decide if a statement is true or false.
-
Image Comparison: Learners decide which one of two images most accurately relates to the question.
-
Open Ended: Learners provide text a response in an open text field.
You can pre-fill an answer in this question type, which can be used as a foundation to an answer or can simply be used as base text that a learner can manipulate in the response field to add or delete any part of the pre-filled text.
You can also copy previous responses, so if there are previous learner responses in the tally assessment, it will show in this question's answer field. -
File Submission: Learners provide a file submission in response to a question or prompt. Some acceptable file types include PNG, JPG, GIF, PDF, and MP3. Files that contain extensions with executable scripts, like .html, .svg, and .exe, are not allowed to be uploaded. File size limit is 20MB. File submissions are found under the Grading tab of the admin interface.
-
Essay: Learners submit a text response in a text field (WYSIWYG) in response to given prompts. A Content to Review field can be used to give context or essay instructions. The Question prompt is used define the learner's task.
-
Multiple Choice: Learners select one or more answer choices in response to a question.
- Click Add Question to save your question to the tally.
- Repeat these steps until all of your questions have been added.
- In each answer choice's Points field, enter the number of points you want to assign to each answer choice. The point total will determine what scoring tier feedback the learner receives later (see the Add a Score Tier step below).
- Add rejoinders to each question, which provide immediate feedback to learners when they select a given answer choice.
Learner View of a Rejoinder - Click Add Question to add your question to the tally.
- Repeat these steps until all of your questions have been added.
- Click Add a Score Tier. Enter a title, the score range for this tier, and the body of text that learners see on the results page when their responses correspond to this score range.
- Click Save.
- Add as many score tiers as needed.
- Next, update your Tally Options and click Save.
-
Enter a start of tally message: Enter a custom message in the WYSIWYG that will display to the learner on the start screen.
-
Enter an end of tally message: Enter a custom message in the WYSIWYG that will display to the learner on the end screen after responses are submitted.
- Allow learners to skip questions: Allows learners to bypass questions.
- Display all hints: All rejoinders are shown upon answer selection. For some question types, you have the option to add choice rejoinders, which appear immediately after a learner selects an answer. Rejoinders act as a tool to give your learners feedback on the answer they choose, which also might explain why the choice they selected is correct or incorrect. To do this, find the question you want to edit, then click Add choice rejoinder for each choice to which you would like to add the rejoinder. A rejoinder field is a WYSIWYG.
- Allow the instructor to take the tally on behalf of learners: An admin or instructor role can use this setting to take a tally assessment on behalf of a learner through the admin or instructor interface.
-
Enter a start of tally message: Enter a custom message in the WYSIWYG that will display to the learner on the start screen.
- You also have these options under Advanced Settings:
- Unlocking for editing by children?: This allows any page that is unlocked to be edited by a Client Admin in Panorama. The Client Admin will be able to make changes to the unlocked page in a course in their Panorama only (other Panoramas will not see these changes).
- Add an Audio Narration File: Add an mp3 file here if you would like learners to have the option of playing an audio file on a given page.
- # of seconds required for completion: This settings requires learners to be on this page for the number of seconds you require in order to mark the page as complete. Times is entered in seconds only (e.g. enter 180 seconds to represent three minutes).
- Click Save.
Notes, Tips, and Considerations
- Text Blocks: When using a tally page, you have the ability to add additional information in text blocks. This can be helpful if you need to separate information, add images, or give directions for a specific question, etc.
- Question Body: The question body is a WYSIWYG, so you are free to add images, HTML, links, and more in order to create a robust question experience. Note that answer choices are not WYSIWYGs.
- Best Practice: Create a test learner so you can sign in as a learner and take the tally assessment to get the full learner experience. Refine your tally settings based on your experience as a test learner.
